Designing Polymers to Introduce Functionalities or Optimize Materials Properties

The designing of polymers by monomer selection to tune material properties and/or functionality to the specific needs of our customers is one of the cores of our activities. In addition to the well-known polymerization techniques, we have several processes aimed at solution, melt, and solid phase-based post-polymerization modification of polymers for local and global customers with specific needs regarding their material performance. Whether it is a question of adding chemical functionality, altering the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, or incorporating high-end features such as anti-bacterial properties, we have a wide range of tools for an extensive range of thermoplastics. The first materials are currently being evaluated by our customers. We are ready to produce them.

Functional Additives by QL Polymers

QL Polymers has a number of solutions that enhance the performance of additives, including nanoparticles, in polymers. These additives range from antibacterial, antifogging, antistatic, coupling agents to a range of specialties. Examples of QL Polymers’ added value are that by modifying existing additives or designing new ones, our customers gain more control over the migration or functionality of additives. The additives are typically developed and produced in-house, as off-the-shelf solutions do not perform satisfactorily. These developments are a typical example of projects that require close collaboration with our customers to succeed. QL Polymers aims for long-term partnerships to design, produce and deliver the customized additives to its customers.

Bio-based Polymers, Additives and Solvents

As a result of the growing awareness of creating a sustainable and more circular economy, the use of bio-based additives, solvents and polymers is constantly increasing. This can be as simple as looking for alternative bio-based monomers or solvents for utilization in existing processes to more complex entirely new product or process developments. In addition to customer-driven enquiries, QL Polymers directs a significant part of its internal research efforts towards developments in this area, including finding new solutions for end-of-life challenges.
